Public pier access was closed from 20 July 2026. The subsequent marine notice sets out the whole-pier closure and marked works exclusion area. Temporary fencing and works may also affect movement near the pier entrance.

Portsea Pier Diving
Portsea Pier reaches into Port Phillip at the western end of the Mornington Peninsula. Its timber structure and seagrass setting have long drawn divers to this stretch of foreshore. Major repairs now shape the visit: the pier is closed, with a restricted works area around it.

Current status
Pier closed for maintenance
No pedestrian or vessel access to the pier
The entire pier is closed during repairs. A marked exclusion area around the works also prohibits entry, except for authorised works personnel and Parks Victoria officers. Notice 386(T)-2026 applies from 17 August 2026 until further notice.

Major structural repairs
Repairing the pier after storm damage
The project follows storm damage in 2024 and temporary emergency repairs. Parks Victoria’s programme includes replacing more than 40 timber piles and repairing beams, decking and capping.
Completion is not yet reopening
The published target is before summer 2026, subject to weather. Parks Victoria says another marine notice will follow. Potential staged access for licensed tour operators requires safety approval; it is not confirmation of public or diver access.

Weather does not change the access notice
Parks Victoria identifies strong currents and submerged obstacles among the site’s water hazards. Check Bureau of Meteorology marine forecasts and current marine notices. A calm forecast is not permission to enter a restricted area.

Historical diving context
Timber, seagrass and a long diving association
Parks Victoria documents Portsea as a well-known diving location, with patchy seagrass beds and weedy seadragon sightings around the timber pier. This describes its established underwater character, not today’s access or a guarantee of a wildlife encounter.

Planning around the current works
Can I currently dive Portsea Pier?
The pier cannot currently be used for access, and entry into the marked works exclusion area is prohibited. This page does not establish an alternative dive route outside that area. Follow the current authority notice and on-site restrictions.
Has a reopening date been confirmed?
No confirmed reopening date was found in the official updates checked on 8 September 2026. The works completion target is weather-dependent, not a public-access approval.
Why are old entry and parking directions not shown?
Construction can alter the foreshore, pier and water access. Older directions cannot establish a current route, so these modules will wait for separately reviewed evidence.
What does the map show?
The approximate pier locality only. The marker is not an entry point, and the map does not draw the construction boundary.
Can I share a recent observation?
Use Share your conditions for an actual dive: the form requires dive date, time and visibility. Reports are reviewed before display.
