Shearwater Peregrine Dive Computer

If readability is the reason for moving beyond a smaller dive computer, the Shearwater Peregrine makes a strong case. Its 2.2-inch colour LCD gives depth, time, no-decompression information and decompression guidance room to breathe. That extra space is useful in lower visibility, with thicker gloves or whenever several pieces of information need attention at once. A two-button interface keeps setup and in-water use direct.

Peregrine supports Air, Nitrox, three-gas Nitrox and Gauge modes. It suits a new diver who wants a computer that will remain useful through advanced Nitrox and planned decompression training, without paying for technical modes that are not relevant. Bühlmann ZHL-16C with adjustable gradient factors and support for up to three open-circuit gases give progressing recreational divers meaningful control while retaining a clear menu structure.

The important buying boundary is what Peregrine leaves out. It does not provide air integration or a built-in compass, so cylinder pressure and navigation remain on separate instruments. For many divers that is entirely sensible: the computer delivers Shearwater's large display and decompression information without the additional cost of features they may not use. It is worth deciding before purchase, because air integration cannot be added to the standard Peregrine later.

The internal rechargeable battery provides up to 30 hours at medium brightness and charges wirelessly. Bluetooth supports log transfer, firmware updates and review through Dive Shearwater. The battery is factory replaceable rather than user serviced, and the supplied strap and shock cord provide two practical mounting approaches.

Peregrine is often the right choice when a generous display and simple recreational-to-advanced-Nitrox progression matter more than compact everyday wear. Peregrine TX adds transmitter support, a digital compass and sidemount capability. Tern is smaller and includes Freedive mode, while Perdix 3 is the appropriate step only for divers who require Trimix, CCR, a field-replaceable battery or a broader technical platform.
